Bronchitis describes a condition where the lining of the bronchial tubes (the main air passage between nose and lungs) becomes inflamed or swollen. This disease is more prone to cold and damp climates.
Bronchitis can be subcategorized into Acute and Chronic. Acute bronchitis is caused usually due to cold or influenza. Acute bronchitis usually has a cough that lasts around three weeks. Chronic bronchitis is defined as a productive cough that lasts for three months or more and occurs every year at least for two years. Most people with chronic bronchitis have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Tobacco smoking is the most common cause, with a number of other factors such as air pollution, weak immune systems, old age and those who are exposed to irritants at work.

Ayurvedic view:
In Ayurveda bronchitis is correlated with one of the types of kasa or swasa pranali shoth. According to Ayurveda any disease is caused by the existence of a favorable environment for the disease causing organisms. Due to a poor lifestyle and wrong eating habits the body loses its immunity and becomes susceptible to various diseases. According to Ayurveda, poor diet and lifestyle regimen causes poor digestion that leads to accumulation of toxins in the body. These accumulated toxins start vitiating the doshas. When the doshas get vitiated especially vata and kapha, then they start circulating in the whole body through of the blood stream, causes imbalance in the nervous system, disruption of biological rhythm. Finally, these circulating vitiated doshas reach the lungs and get lodge there itself and in the respiratory tract manifesting symptoms.

Ayurvedic treatment:
The first step is to remove the toxins from the body, especially from the respiratory system with the help of purification process called Panchakarma therapy. The next step is to open the channels of circulation. Along with panchakarma therapy, there are several Ayurvedic formulations available:

  1. Kanskasva.
