Endometriosis Natural Ayurvedic Treatment

Endometriosis Natural Ayurvedic Treatment

Endometriosis is a common and often painful condition. It has been found to affect approximately 10% of women at some stage during their menstruating years. From when your first period starts through to menopause, endometriosis can occur at any time. Endometriosis can have a major impact on your quality of life with the symptoms interfering with work, relationships, family and overall health.

What is Endometriosis :-

Endometriosis is a condition where the endometrial cells (cells that form the lining of the uterus) begin growing elsewhere in the body. The endometrial tissue implants itself onto the surface of the tissue or organ where it has been deposited and begins to grow.

Symptoms and Signs of Endometriosis :-

The severity of endometriosis symptoms can vary from woman to woman. Some women experience debilitating pain and symptoms, while others have no symptoms and are unaware they even have the condition. Some women only discover they have endometriosis when they have trouble getting pregnant.

Symptoms often improve during pregnancy and after menopause.

Symptoms of endometriosis may include:

* Period pain (known as dysmenorrhoea) that has often become more severe over time;
* pelvic pain starting several days before a period;
* pain in the abdomen and pelvis area when you are not having a period;
* pelvic pain during ovulation;
* pain during or after sexual intercourse (known as dyspareunia);
* lower back pain;
* heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding, including passing blood clots;
‘spotting’ or bleeding between periods;
* fatigue;
* diarrhoea, bloating or constipation, especially during a period; and
* having difficulty getting pregnant (which affects about 30-50 per cent of women with endometriosis).

Some women experience stress and anxiety as a result of knowing their monthly period will bring pain and discomfort. If you feel like this you should see your doctor to find out the cause of your discomfort.

Causes and Treatment in Allopathy :-

Currently, the causes of endometriosis are still not certain though mentioned some as seen in above picture. Surgery and pain management are currently the only treatments for endometriosis and there is no cure.

Ayurvedic View of Endometriosis :-

Endometriosis is described in Ayurveda under the heading of Vataja Yonivyapadh and udavartha. Endometriosis is described as a Sannipatika condition, which means that it could be linked to imbalances of vitiation of any of the doshas. The patient’s unique dosha profile or prakriti therefore also has a role to play. As per Ayurved endometriosis is mainly due to kapha dosha that increases the buildup of cells like a tumor. It is also due to pitta imbalance like blood involvement, hormones imbalance, menstruation and inflammatory nature of the disease. The painful nature of endometriosis is due to vata imbalance in the body.

As per Ayurveda all movements inside our body are due to Vata Dosha. Functions of Apana Vata: providing energy for the act of urination, defecation, flatulence, expulsion of blood during periods, expulsion of fetus during birth. Its default direction is downwards. When a woman does certain things in her diet/ lifestyle that vitiates Apana vata, then it starts moving upwards instead of downward. This causes period blood to move upwards in the pelvic cavity instead of coming out through vagina. As a result, uterine lining known as endometrium gets lodged on pelvic organs like ovary, intestine etc. Eventually endometrium starts growing at abnormal places & starts bleeding during periods. This gives rise to adhesions, inflammation & severe pain.

Treatment options in Ayurveda for Endometriosis :-

With its holistic approach, Ayurveda seeks to address these underlying causes and cure endometriosis rather than simply treat the symptoms. Detoxification and purification procedures to destroy and remove ama are therefore critical, as is restoring the natural balance of doshas. Panchakarma is an important Ayurvedic therapy that can be used to achieve these goals and it helps normalize hormonal and menstrual functions. The therapy involves five procedures and is best administered in a specialized Ayurvedic clinic with qualified specialists. The therapy also requires dietary and lifestyle interventions to ensure success.

In addition to panchakarm or as part of the procedures, patients are also advised to use Ayurvedic medications for endometriosis, which are made from completely natural ingredients such as herbs, spices, and minerals.

Some of the commonly used herbs in Endometriosis are :-

1. Guggul : A very good uterine tonic and helps in normalizing menstruation flow.

2. Ashoka : Helps to strengthen uterine and endometrium muscles, Helps to balance hormonal levels.

3. Guduchi : Helps to remove uterine toxins and so does it's detoxification

4. Gokhru : Enhances sexual functions and balances hormones

5. Aswagandha : Tones up uterus,gives it strength, balance hormones and removes anxiety.

6. Turmeric : Best anti inflammatory and detox agent. Decreases pain.

7. Shatavari : It helps to normalise hormones and a good uterine tonic.

9. Amla : Best uterine tonic, antioxidant and anti inflammatory herb that helps in dosha balance

The strength of Ayurvedic treatments is in its ability to remove the root cause of the disease rather than treating the symptoms. It improves body’s natural healing ability and brings back the state of equilibrium.
